Hidden Threats for Brassica Roots: DRIS to the Rescue

Healthy-looking brassicas can inadvertently hide serious problems below the surface, right at the roots. Rhizoctonia disease (from the soil-borne fungus Rhizoctonia solani) and Clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae) both attack the roots, weakening plants by disrupting nutrient uptake.

These pathogens carry a hidden advantage most growers miss: they start thriving and turn infectious when the soil around the roots becomes problematic and unstable. Fix the conditions, and you take away their opening.

Problems in the soil, problems for the roots

Three conditions do most of the damage:

• Nutrient imbalance, a lack or excess of essential nutrients that undermines crop health and yield.
• Soil compaction, which reduces pore space, raises bulk density and degrades structure.
• Poor aeration, where compaction, excess moisture or heavy clay starve roots of oxygen.

Together they create anaerobic conditions, and that is especially damaging to nitrogen. Aeration keeps the aerobic bacteria that convert organic nitrogen into plant-available forms (nitrification) active. Starve the soil of oxygen and those bacteria slow down, so nitrogen is lost to the atmosphere through denitrification.

Good aeration also lets roots absorb more plant-available nitrate; poor aeration instead lets harmful nitrite and sulphides accumulate.
