Correcting a hidden phosphorus block in Limpopo macadamias
Leaf analysis read "adequate" everywhere, yet yields had plateaued. DRIS ranked phosphorus as the real limiting factor, masked by a potassium excess, and correcting it lifted kernel recovery the next season.

The plateau that didn’t add up
By every conventional reading, the orchard’s nutrition looked fine. Standard leaf analysis put each nutrient inside its “sufficiency range,” and the grower had been fertilising to those targets for three seasons. Yet kernel recovery had flattened, and a good chunk of the crop was setting poorly for no obvious reason.
Sufficiency ranges treat each nutrient in isolation. They can’t see the thing that was actually happening here: nutrients pulling against one another.
What the readout showed
Running the soil and tissue samples through DRIS reframed the same data as a system of ratios. Instead of six independent “pass/fail” checks, every nutrient was scored by how far its ratios sat from a calibrated norm population for bearing macadamias.
Phosphorus came back at an index of −24, the most limiting factor by a wide margin, while potassium sat at +16. The excess K was masking the P deficiency in the raw numbers.
That ordering is the whole point. A grower can only correct one or two factors meaningfully in a season, so knowing which factor leads matters more than the absolute concentration of any single element.
The correction
The plan was deliberately narrow: address phosphorus availability, and ease back the potassium programme so the ratio could recover rather than fighting it with more inputs. Magnesium, sitting at −11, was flagged as the next factor to watch but left for the following cycle.
Two more sample rounds across the season tracked the response. By the third readout, the P index had moved back toward balance and the K excess had eased, and the orchard’s sound kernel recovery came in 18% above the prior season.
Why it worked
Nothing exotic happened agronomically. The win came from sequencing: treating the factor that was furthest out of balance first, instead of spreading effort evenly across nutrients that the conventional report had already called “adequate.” That’s the difference between a table of numbers and a diagnosis.
